Let’s talk about motivation.
Summer is over (in this hemisphere at least!) Your mood is low, daylight savings is ending soon and you’re in a slump. You know what you SHOULD be doing, but for some reason you don’t know where to start.
You need to take action, but you just can’t seem to get into a routine and this is when you really need to define your WHY and change your focus.
How many times have you promised to start tomorrow with diet or exercise knowing that you should make a change? Then tomorrow comes and you “fail” by 3pm that afternoon? Or hit snooze for that morning exercise class and promise to make it up later in the week?
Too many people view exercise and good nutrition as a means to looking good. They see diets or eating with the mindset of “failing or succeeding” and this is simply not a sustainable frame of mind. That’s why, more often that not, it’s an all or nothing approach.
You need to look at “Wellness” and what it means to you, but when you can’t “see it” it can seem really hard to define.
Wellness is not something you can necessarily “see”, but when your intentions are focused in the right direction, you can definitely FEEL the difference and it can affect most areas of your life.
It’s not about sculpted abs, it’s not about weight loss and it’s not about looking good – these are all a bi product of focusing on good health and nutrition, but shouldn’t be the focus when taking a “wellness” approach.
Wellness is definitely not about putting your body into deficit to lose weight and it’s most certainly not about deprivation.
It may seem that wellness is a buzzword at the moment and it has been given a lot of hype within social media circles, but what exactly is it? (You can read my blog post “Wellness is not a dirty word” where I go on a bit of a rant about Belle Gibson and how we all got fooled.)
Wellness is a holistic approach to nutrition, it’s about changing your behaviours, it’s about balance, health, fitness and frame of mind and is so much more powerful than focusing on bikini bodies. You cannot achieve true health and wellness without focusing on fitness, nutrition and mental health together and I talk about that so much in my ebook “Health, Fitness and Chasing Dreams”

As a society we are obsessed with vanity. We are captivated with achieving bikini bodies, 12 week challenges to get as “ripped” as possible. We are consumed with looking for quick fixes and magical pills and solutions, but the answers are right in front of us. If we let go of our preconceived notion of what wellness or health and fitness look like and focus on what it feels like, then we find our solutions.
Wellness is about a positive state of mind, feeling productive, feeling energetic, glowing with confidence and truly connecting with people. It’s about quality of life. It’s about feeling supported, having the right perspective, a feeling of contentment, having great relationships and it all starts with YOU.
It is so much more powerful than focusing on a bikini body ever could be.
Wellness is figuring out which foods nourish your body, which preservatives mess with your mood (and eliminating them!), why sugar makes you crash and burn, focusing on gut health, nutrient dense foods, endorphin releasing exercise and finding a solution that is as individual as you.
If you start putting yourself first, investing in your health & fitness, other areas of your life will fall into place. When people start putting themselves first I’ve seen their outlook on life change. This has happened with clients time and time again (and I can vouch for the changes from personal experience also)
When you focus on the right things, make changes to your behaviours, fitness, nutrition and be clear about your intentions, you’ll experience more energy, a feeling of productivity and your confidence will soar. That is “Wellness”
No matter your starting weight or your genetic make up, you have the capacity to be lean, you just need to kick-start your metabolism. You need to look at avoidable stresses in your life and be really clear with your goals and your objectives. We are meant to be energetic and healthy…
Focus on the right things and the rest will follow.
Focus on actionable goals – Knowing that it will improve the way you feel and set you up for new habits, what are 3 things you can action right now and today?
What can you implement RIGHT now to improve your wellness? Your goals have to be broken down and measurable. For example – drinking more water is not a solution, but drinking 3 glasses of water before bed tonight, is a measurable goal.
